Christmas Carols and Me

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
The Little Drummer Boy was never one of my favorite Christmas time carols but this year, for some unknown reason, it has become my constant.
I hum it in my mind and to myself as I drive.
One year, a few years ago, it was The Christmas Waltz. No, I don’t know why.
Each year I buy a CD of Christmas songs. Last year was The Christmas Belles – one of the Lifetimes Intimate Portraits series of CDs – and it’s great !

Peggy Lee. Lena Horne. Ella Fitzgerald. Doris Day. Eartha Kitt. Sarah Vaughn. Rosemary Clooney. Brenda Lee. June Christy. And Pearl freakin’ Bailey singin’ Jingle Bells Cha-Cha-Cha. And, can you believe it, even more (Judy, of course) ! ! !
What more could you ask for? Except maybe Karen Carpenter’s The Christmas Waltz. But that is of a more recent time.
And nowhere on this CD is The Little Drummer Boy. I have a CD with Julie Andrews singin’ it. Like most things Julie sings – it’s mesmerizing. Julie has an honesty in her songs that makes the lyrics undeniable. But even with that, the diminutive percussionist has not been one of my favorites.
Something changed this year. The humility of the point of view perhaps. The desire to please. To measure up. To be worthy.
I don’t know.
I don’t know.
What CD should I purchase this year?
What carol should I listen to with a new ear to meaning?
What’s been your favorite?
